Discover the Art of Fly Fishing
Perfect for beginners, this course offers a solid introduction to the world of fly fishing. Participants will explore key terminology, learn about essential gear for targeting various species and conditions, gain insight into the different types of flies and how they’re used, and learn the basics of aquatic stream biology. Although several important casts and mends will be demonstrated, the focus of the class is on hands-on casting practice. You’ll work on the basic forward cast and roll cast, along with the flopping mend. While all equipment is provided, participants are encouraged to bring their own fly rod setup if they have one. Supplemental materials covering additional topics will be provided through handouts and online resources.

He is a member of the Pro Programs of several manufacturers of fly rods, reels, and lines. He has been teaching under the Orvis School Program since around 2012. He also taught in the free Orvis 101 classes held at the Orvis store in Lombard, Illinois, when he lived in northern Illinois. He has given numerous fly fishing presentations at various venues, including at the Wisconsin River Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited meetings.

Terry Rutlin worked at Nicolet College for 25 years, retiring as Public Information Officer, and coordinator and instructor for the Outdoor Adventure program. While relatively new to casting flies, he’s getting ready to start his sixth season of Fly Fishing. He regularly hits up streams across northern Wisconsin, the Driftless Area in Southwestern Wisconsin, and streams in the U.P.
